How Often Should Your Chimney Be Swept?

The honest answer from working chimney professionals — what the safety guidance says, and the warning signs you are overdue.

It's the question we hear on almost every first call: “How often does a chimney actually need to be swept?” The honest answer is simpler than most companies make it sound — and skipping it is the single most common cause of the chimney fires we get called out to inspect afterward.

The Short Answer: Once a Year, Every Year

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA Standard 211) recommends that chimneys, fireplaces and vents be inspected at least once a year, and cleaned whenever creosote has built up. For a fireplace that gets regular winter use, that works out to a sweep every year — ideally in late summer or fall, before the burning season starts.

Why creosote matters: every wood fire deposits a sticky, highly flammable residue called creosote inside your flue. At 1/8 inch of buildup, professionals recommend cleaning. At 1/4 inch, your chimney is a genuine fire hazard — creosote ignites at around 1,000°F, and a chimney fire can reach over 2,000°F.

Burn More? Sweep More.

Once a year is the floor, not the ceiling. You should move to twice a year if any of these sound like your home:

What If You Barely Use the Fireplace?

Even a fireplace that burned a handful of fires last year needs its annual inspection. Chimneys fail for reasons that have nothing to do with soot: birds and squirrels nest in uncapped flues, mortar joints crack and let water in, and caps rust through. Ten minutes of inspection catches problems while they're a $200 fix instead of a $3,000 rebuild.

The Warning Signs You're Overdue

What a Professional Sweep Actually Includes

A proper sweep isn't just a brush up the flue. A professional visit is a bottom-up sweep for full airflow, plus a safety check of the firebox, damper, smoke chamber, flue liner, crown and cap — with photos of anything we find, so you can see exactly what we see. No pressure, no surprise add-ons: we show you, you decide.

The Best Time to Book? Before the Rush.

Chimney companies everywhere book out fast from October through January. Schedule your chimney sweep in late summer or early fall and you'll get your pick of appointment windows — and walk into burning season knowing your chimney is clean, capped and safe.
